Grind to a halt

"The traffic ground to a halt."

"The traffic came to a halt."

Are both of these correct?

If so, is the second one used more frequently in everyday conversation?

Thank you.

They are both correct, but the first one has a more dramatic feel and suggests a big traffic jam, whereas the second could be used in any situation where traffic stopped.
