Grew up/stay to himself

Hi

Larry, now age 52, grew up painfully shy and gawky and spent much of his time on his own.

--- I understand that he is shy and gawky and spends time on his own right now; this is not referring to his past?

At work he stayed to himself and quickly became known as unapproachable.

--- Does it mean that at work he was indrawn?

secondly yes, that does mean that at work he was withdrawn, however "unapproachable" generally implies that others would avoid him instead of "indrawn" which is if he would avoid other people. these are very small distinctions but they make a huge differen
