Grenadiers

There were brought into service a new sort of soldiers called grenadiers who were

dextrous in flinging hand grenades. They had furred caps with coped crowns which

made them look very fierce.

What is coped crown? A crown-shaped badge or something?

I cannot find an on-line explanation, mariott, but I think 'coped' refers to the fact that the crown of the hat is bigger than its base and overhangs the lower part and/or overhangs the face:
