Greetings

Hello everyone, I'm a newcomer. It is a wonderful job you guys are doing with this forum.

I have a doubt. I wonder if anyone could help me with it:

"In my backpack there is a pencil, a book and a rubber"

or

"In my backpack there are a pencil, a book and a rubber"

Which one is correct?

Top answer

I think the first sounds completely natural. Three individual things are listed individually. You would have to say, "...

I think the first sounds completely natural.

Three individual things are listed individually.

You would have to say, "... there are three pencils", but I interpret the sentence as being an abbreviated version of, "In my backpack there is a pencil, and there is a book, and there is a rubber."

If the pencil is more than one you can put "are", if not you are correct with "in my backpage there is a pencil, a book and a rubber"
