green light is short.

Can you describe a free light as short? Is it natural?
This green light is so short. It only lasts about 10 seconds. It turns red after in 10 seconds.

You asked, "Why 'free light'?" And it took me awhile to notice it.
I assume Anon meant the courtesy advance green light for traffic turning left (right, in England).
