Green chilli vs Green pepper

Question

HiWould you say that green chilli and green pepper are the same thing? What about capsicum?Thanks,Tom

By combining several ideas from my dictionary I may evolve the following:

* Chilli is a pod of a capsicum – a type of hot pepper.

* Green pepper is a pod of the sweet papper, which is another type of pepper,
different from capsicum, and as its name suggests, it's sweet.

* However, there is also a jalapeño, which is a very hot green chilli; so chilli
may also be green.

Everything is completely entangled =)

In Australia, 'chilli' is a popular term for smaller, hotter fruit vareties within the Capsicum genus. We do not call milder varieties of the Capsicum genus 'chillis'. We instead refer to them only by specific variety names, e.g. capsicum, pimento, jalapeno (which is only quite hot, not very hot; there are far hotter varieties).

In America, hot varieties within the Capsicum genus are popularly called 'chilli peppers' (or else by a specific variety name). Milder fruit varieties within the Capsicum genus are popularly called simply 'peppers' (or else by a specific variety name).

What Australians call a pimento, Americans call a 'cherry pepper'.

What Australians call a jalapeno, Americans call a 'jalapeno'.

What Australians call a capsicum, Americans call a 'bell pepper'.

I believe both of the above naming systems are used in the UK. Perhaps a resident can tell us which is more common.

If you're talking about simply 'capsicums' or 'peppers', you're either talking about peppers generally or you're specifically talking about bell peppers.

If you're talking about simply 'a chilli' or simply 'a chilli pepper' you're either talking non-specifically about any hot variety of pepper or you're talking specifically about a bird's eye chilli.

A 'green pepper' is a bell pepper which just happens to be green. In Australia you would call it a 'green capsicum'. Most (possibly all) varieties with the Capsicum genus come in a variety of colours (red, green, orange, yellow) - the difference is purely cosmetic.

"Green chili" - Chili (of sorts), with ingredients that would be visually green. There is a green chili sauce at a mexican restarant that is used over with enchilladas. It has green chillis, cilantro, water, onions and spices

"a green chili" - would probably indicate any vegitable of the chili family that is green

"green pepper" - would probably indicte a bell pepper; secondary, any vegitable from the pepper family that is green
