Can you tell me if there is any difference between the following two sentences? Would the context be differ between the two?
It was a great help. -- help in this instance means making a task easier?
It was great help. -- help in this instance means helping in an emergency situation?

I would say that #2 was possible, but rare.
1. It was a great help = it was very useful.
2. It was great help = the help was great.

In my educated opinion, both sentences are grammatically correct; however, the second sentence would be probably be utilitized as an embedded sentence or with a prepositional phrase, as you have shown above.
With regard to sentence one, you could also say this: it was of great help.

There is no need to embedd the second sentence. A quick Google search will reveal that "was great help" has 18,200 hits. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with the expression, "It was great help". It was on CNN.com and BBC web site too.
