Great Expectations

Stephen Woolley To Remake Great Expectations
Movie producer Stephen Woolley is to make a new version of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Echoing recent trends in the post-Twilight era, he is planning to give the story a darker, more Gothic feel than is usual. This is something that also worked well for ITV's recent adaptation of Emily Bronte's literary masterpiece Wuthering Heights.
Woolley has secured backing from the UK Film Council and distributor Optimum Releasing. He will produce the film alongside Elizabeth Karlsen, his partner and co-founder at production company Number 9 Films.

Optimum is also backing director Rowan Joffe¹s adaptation of Graham Greene's gangster classic Brighton Rock. Recent additions to the cast of Brighton Rock include Helen Mirren and Pete Postlethwaite. Principal photography starts on October 18 with the shoot centred on Brighton and London. Although written in 1939, Joffe has set the film in 1964 to give the film a more contemporary mods and rockers feel.

  • GREAT EXPECTATIONS and WUTHERING HEIGHTS, however, have very strong Gothic elements in them, something that David Lean exploited wonderfully in his adaptation of the former.
  • GREAT EXPECTATIONS is my all-time favorite Dickens, so I'll certainly be checking this one out.

Something I've never understood about the David Lean Great Expectations is the hugely-praised reveal of the convict in the graveyard. I've seen it described as a great combination of lighting, camerawork, editing and acting - and it does nothing for me at all: no menace, no shock, no nothing. Must be me...
