Gray virtual rectangles

In your mailbox, if you try to open a document, and in many other similar applications, a gray rectangle will appear, with a choice of clicks, like Open, Save, etc. What do you call that box?

I thought a dropdown was a list actually descending from some clickable point, rather than a box out in the middle without any connection.

What then is a dialog box?

Hi,

Well, you didn't really say a lot about how the box got triggered.

Your suggestion of a dialogue box seems more apt.
