Grammer Usage for Date Ranges

The war in Iraq had many challeneges from 2003-2006. I want to know what is the correct grammer usage for using a date range. Does the 2003-2006 need to be in perenthesis? Also if it does need to be in perenthesis, is the period inside or outside the perenthesis? (2003-2006). Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, Cuate. No, the years should not be put in parentheses there. If you do put a few words in parentheses at the end of a sentence, the period should be placed outside the parentheses.

I was taught that it should be '... from 2003 to 2006'.

Hi YL

Are we talking about the same thing? The question here was about parentheses, not about quotation marks.

Or did you simply want to indicate your preference for the word to as opposed to using the dash?
It is quite common to see a span of years written with a dash:
2003 - 2006
If this written form is read out loud, the dash will be read as

Thanks, Amy.

What I meant was that II was taught that iit should be 'from 2003 to 2006', not 'from 2003 - 2006'. I hope I was not taught wrongly.

If my version is correct, then there is no question about whether to use brackets.

Hi YL

There is no question about the fact that Cuate should not put 2003 - 2006 in parentheses in that particular sentence, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not the word to or a dash is used.

Of course it is possible to use the word to instead of the dash, and I suppose using the word to might be
