Grammer Problem
I read an article in which I have some grammer problems.
a) Drummers were needed on the battlefield to alert soldiers when to retreat to safty.
Is "when" used here as subordinator to connect two clauses? why there is no subject and verb in the clause beginning with when?
b)Off the battlefield, the drummer's beats alerted officers to planning meeting?
why using "planning" instead of plan(verb root)? or "alert to" is a phrasal verb and the structure is alter to+Ving /n?
