what is the diference in the meaning from theses :

Did you eat?
Have you eaten?

and

How long have you lived in Japan?

Did you eat? - I`m asking if you`re still hungry as I know you have attended supper.

Have you eaten? - I might offer you a meal if you`re hungry.

How long have you lived in Japan? - You no longer live there.

How long have you been living in Japan? - You`re still living there.

Did you eat? is related to the past only. Past action. There is no limit to how far in the past.

Have you eaten? is related to the present. Present state brought about by past action. The past action is probably not very far in the past.


How long have you lived in Japan? is almost the same as How long have you been living in Japan? been li
