Grammer

I am on my last attempt with the following questions. I have included the answers I think are correct and the examiners comments, I have really tried and I just can'y work out the correct answers. ny help would be great.

For each of the following four sentences:
(i ) Identify the verb phrase.
(ii) Name the structure.
(iii) Label the parts of the structure.
(iv) Describe the functional meaning conveyed by the verb in the sentence.

Examples:

I start work at seven every morning.
(i ) start
(ii) present simple
(iii) base form
(iv) a routine

I was living in Peru at the time.
(i ) was living
(ii) past continuous
(iii) auxiliary 'be' (past tense) + present participle
(iv) an activity in progress at a specified time in the past

Answer:


( i) Went
(ii) Past simple
(iii) Subject + Past Participle
(iv) A completed action at a specified time in the past



Comment: (iii) Unfortunately this is not the past participle form of the verb. Comment: (ii) Yes, it is a modal structure in the present simple. (iii) Auxiliary of what verb in what tense? + (not the present participle but something else)? Please rethink this answer. (iii) subject + Auxilery verb (has) + past participle (been)
(iv) A activity that began in the past and continues down to the present


Comment: (i ) is now correct. (ii) the continuous form would be 'has been doing'. I don't understand the 'present participle.'

Verbs have 3 forms - The first form/base form/infinative. This is used for the present. Negatives and questions in the past where the Aux tak

Please be aware that i-to-i tutors are aware of this page. Many of these answers are wrong. If you use the answers, you will fail the checkpoint because you are cheating.

If the questions weren't so ambiguous then students wouldn't have to cheat. I would not dream of setting such questions for my students so why are they used to test teachers?! If native English speakers are struggling so much with these questions then *** help anyone using something similar for foreign students. If you put the right answers then you won't get caught cheating as they are generally
