Manatees are mammals whose population is endangered. Also known as sea cows, manatees have dark gray skin, a very small head, poorly developed eyes the don’t see well, and two front flippers. Their tails are large, rounded flippers. Manatees live in shallow, fresh water or saltwater and eat underwater plants. They live in the southeastern part of the United Stated, western Africa, South America, the Amazon and the Caribbean Sea.

Manatees are very gentle animals. Rubbing muzzles is how they communicate. If alarmed, they make a chirping noise. By adulthood they grow to between eight and fifteen feet and weight nearly 1500 pounds. Scientists studying an adult manatee have observed that it can eat about 100 pounds of plants in one day.

Manatees can clean waterways by eating vegetation before it blocks narrow passage. In some areas, manatees are encouraged to thrive so the will keep waterways free of plants. Boats and boat propellers ate the worst enemy of the manatee. In a few places., people hunt them for meat, oil, and hides. This hunting has led to the decline of the manatee population. However, in most areas, manatees are protected by law.
