Grammatically correct?

It was not always so easy to understand the calendar we use today as now.

Is the sentence grammatically correct? If not, please explain it.

It is not strictly ungrammatical, but it is rather awkward because of the gap between "so easy ... as now". I would change it to this: It was not always as easy as it is now to understand the calendar we use today.
