Grammatical structure

Hi everyone
I have a sentence: "The result is that harmful rays penetrate the protective layer causing global warming"
At the bold part, I think they use compact structure, but I still don't understand clearly, who can explain it for me, thanks.

Grammatical terminology varies somewhat. " I call the original structure a clause equivalent as a present participle ( causing ) is used instead of a finite verb. In this particular case we have a co-ordinate clause equivalent since and is a co-ordinating conjunction.
