Grammatical Problems

I have come across a sentence in a book. This sentence is "There are too much bad news on television tonight". I think the sentence is grammatically incorrect since the word 'news' is uncountable. Though I knew it the book made me confused. I think the correct sentence would be "There is too much bad news on television tonight".

Can anyone remove my confusion ?
