Grammatical error

What's wrong in this sentence :-
He may have gotten mature, but his mind is still a twelve year old functioning.

What's wrong in the above sentence ? Should it be correct this way :-
He may be aged but his mind is still of a 12 years old

The first sentence looks more appealing to me so I prefer that. But is it natural to native ears ?
