Grammatical cohesion SUBSTITUTION

Hello!

Well, I have a mess in my head and I can't realize whether the use of THING/S and STUFF is considered substitution or not.

The word that I was given to make an analysis is STUFF and here is how it appears in the text: "I was the quickest at the one hundred metres in my year, I had only been beaten once in the long jump, and my reflexes were sharp. But all that stuff was useless."

In this case, is STUFF considered nominal substitution or it's just anaphoric reference?

Thanks in advance!

I would say that it is anaphora with a measure of exophora. "Stuff" implies not only the previously mentioned ideas, but related exigencies that the speaker stimulates in their audiences' imaginations. Your choice in the analysis would depend on the precise definitions you are using.
