Hello guys,
I'm finishing my argumentative essay, could someone possibly have a look and maybe point out some mistakes or collocations which are not correct/don't make sense? Thank you very much, this would be a great help
Experiencing Culture Shock has a Positive Impact on Personal Development of Young PeopleOne of the best things about travelling is exploring new cultures. Trying exotic foods, learning about deep-rooted traditions and fostering friendships with people who have different backgrounds shape a person into a more open-minded individual. Unfortunately, thousands of people dream about travelling and living abroad, but the fear of facing unfamiliarity deters them from starting their journey. For a long time, I comforted myself with the negative thought of “I could end up somewhere in a house in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the sound of deafening silence”. Similar thoughts fuel human fears and prevent them from discovering life outside of their community. Nevertheless, every time I talk to someone who has travelled around, they always tell me that the most meaningful moments occurred when they stepped outside of their comfort zone.
To begin with, experiencing culture shock will teach you to trust your gut and make you more independent. When I bought a one-way ticket to Scotland, I found myself in a foreign country far away from my hometown, family and friends. Being exposed to a new language, culture and lifestyle is scary and confusing. However, I gradually learned to listen to the quirky urge, the little voice in my head or the funny tingle in my stomach – a hunch that something is up. For example, I had an interview with a family looking for an au-pair. Employee benefits were perfect, but in the end I decided not to take the job because of a burning sensation in my gut. After a while, a friend informed me that the family was no longer on the list of potential employers because the parents were alcoholics. The human mind is a powerful intuitive communicator which allows people to get the first warnings when something feels off. Those signals carry a lot of important information, so it’s wise to listen to them. Later, when you’re considering a new partnership in your business and something doesn’t feel right, your gut is probably telling you to run in the opposite direction.
Another benefit of experiencing culture shock is coming in close contact with a foreign language. The best way to learn a foreign language is through full immersion. Once I was surrounded only by native speakers, I adapted quickly to a new environment and started to think in English, which considerably broadened my language skills. The reason is that our thought and language faculties are directly connected. For instance, a certain object always conjures up an English word in my mind, even if I have never looked it up or seen the word for it written down. I simply remember the situation and the person who used it.
The last benefit I would like to point out is a valuable lesson that this world is a small place, which I learnt from this real-life experience. Before I experienced several desperate situations abroad, I felt miserable about my shallow life issues in the Czech Republic. Luckily, I faced more urgent problems like being homeless for a few days and living with a mentally ill host mother. Despite all those chaotic situations I found myself in, I learned that we all share similar aspirations: to find love, protect our beloved ones, earn a good living and enjoy what we do. We are all similar and interconnected.
To conclude, the majority of people travelling around the world experience culture shock, but it’s nothing to be afraid of. In my opinion, it gives an individual the opportunity to find themselves and teaches them to adapt and think on their feet. Besides, it presents people with the opportunity to immerse themselves in an entirely new culture. I will always recommend living abroad.
