Grammatical?

Hi.

Dark, the night prevented us from going any farther.

Getting dark, the night prevented us from going any farther.

Are both the above sentences grammatical?

I hesitate to pass judgment on these. Neither seems very idiomatic to my ear, and that prevents me from mentally testing the grammar. If I have to choose, I'll say no, they're not grammatical.
