[grammar] why use past perfect here?

Hello all!

I've just been watching House of Cards (which I find to be a great source of valuable vocabulary, by the way) and one scene has left me perplexed.

Vice President: May I? I know it's late but they said you were up.

Claire Underwood: I hadn't eaten the whole day. I'm sure you haven't.

Why is it that she first uses the past perfect tense and then immediately switches to present perfect?

Thanks
