Grammar vs sense?

Please help me to understand what is wrong with this sentence. Who is being promoted? Maria or her colleagues? If she is, how should this sentence be modified?

On being promoted, Maria's colleagues feigned happiness by congratulating her with an applause.

Thanks,
Andy

I think the context makes it pretty clear that it was Maria who was promoted.

I agree, but it's a poorly constructed sentence.

Is this the case of a dangling modifier?

By the way, it's either 'with applause' or 'with a round of applause'.
