[grammar + vocabulary] serious cold + can't shake it off

Dear Users,

May I ask for your comments on the following sentence?

I've been suffering from a really serious cold for nearly a week now and I can't seem to shake it off.

1) Question: What would be the best replacement for a really serious part?
2) Question2: Is it necessary to use the personal pronoun I in the second part of the sentence? Would it be OK to say and can't seem to shake it off?

Thanks!
