Grammar verb problem

The blue dress looks more flattering on you than the red one.
The blue dress looks more flattering on you than the red one does.

Why is the use of Does compulsory here?

Three times more students attend prom this year that last year.
Three times more students attended the prom this year than did last year.

Why is the use of "did" compulsory here.
Also please explain why are we not writing "than they did last year". Why is they being omitted here. Please explain

I don't think it's mandatory.

There were more students this year than (there were) last year.
The blue dress looks better on you than the red one (does).

You can leave out the verb, or both the subject and the verb. I guess. [:^)]

Yes even I would agree to the sentence:

Three times more students attended the prom this year than last year.
but even this sentence has been mentioned as incorrect.

Native speakers will understand the omitted subject of the second part as this.

Thank you. Even I thought the same, that did is not compulsory, but since they had written otherwise I was convinced that I was making a mistake.
