Grammar: unknown change

Hello all,

I was wondering whether anybody knows a good alternative for the following phrase.

"Option listings could affect the volatility in any direction."

I have a feeling that the phrase is not right and I could not come up with good alternatives. I want to state in a single sentence that options could increase the volatility, decrease the volatility or could not affect the volatility at all.

Thanks in advance,

Poetje

The effect of options listings on volatility is capricious (unpredictable, random, erratic), increasing it, decreasing it, or having no discernable effect at all
