"to charge" in "put a mobile to charge" could also be interpreted as preposition + noun, just as in "put a man to work" or "take someone to task". In the context of your question, that is how I understood it. It still doesn't work, but for a different reason: the choice of preposition "to" is not idiomatic in that context. Like much preposition use, this is not very predictable.
