Grammar tips - genitive case

I was looking for a thorough explanation of the genitive case and how to use it. Despite the amount of sources it is still not clear whether it is correct to use it with inanimate things (e.g. the car's door) and with time expression (especially years, e.g. it is a 1990's movie).

Some sources also mentioned the existence of a descriptive genitive (e.g. the mountain's top) and a possessive genitive (Mary's hat) , this seems to complicate things even more...

Can somebody help me?

Thank you.
