Grammar: the use of hypen

I have these books- Mackbeth, She Stoops to Conquer, and Mrs. Dalloway. Is the above- given sentence correct grammatically?

I think this sentence should be said like, " I have the following books- Mackbeth, She Stoops to Conquer, and Mrs.Dalloway."

First of all, the punctuation character that you are asking about is a dash (properly – or —), not a hyphen (-). It has been typed as a hyphen character. Secondly, if you use spaces with a dash, you need a space before and after, so your sentence should look like this: I have these books – Macbeth , She Stoops to Conquer , and Mrs Dalloway .

  • It is good style to put the titles in italics.
  • Note also the spelling "Macbeth".
