Grammar structure of a sentence in a book

Hi Everyone,

I just came across this sentence while reading my novel and I didn't really understand the meaning and grammar structure of it.

It will leave the base itself exposed, giving Alex and his men a perfect opportunity to strike.

Why can we simply place a comma and turn a verb into its continuous form when connecting two sentences?

What does the sentence mean?

Would anyone please help me out with this question?

Many thanks in advance

Kenny
