such was the ... is a lesser used expression that gives the reason for the previously mentioned event.

The staff started to fume (=get very angry). Why? Because what happened (being left out in the cold and being forbidden to use the stairs) was unwarranted interference.

Choosing a main course was more of a challenge, such was the variety of options on offer. (because there were so many options to choose from)
Liverpool could have scored at will, such was the gulf in quality between the sides. (because the difference in the ability between the teams was enormous)
The company couldn't build enough houses and apartments, such was the demand. (because the demand was so high)
