"I should have fallen into the hands of the murderous Ghazis had it not been for the devotion and courage shown by Murray, my orderly, who threw me across a pack-horse, and succeeded in bringing me safely to the British lines.". In the above sentence, I have a trouble with this "murderous Ghazis had it not been", there should be an inversion here; but I can't recognize where the subject is an what the meaning of whole this passage is. Thanks in advance. ^^.
