GRammar rules

I was telling a foreigner that I was 5 foot 10ins tall, and he asked why "foot" and not "feet"?

I said foot was for height and for distance, but in fact we would say Everest is ???? feet high, so now I'm not sure.

Is there a rule, or can both be used?

thanks
