Grammar questions--nuances

What is the difference in meaning?

a. The car dates from the 20th century.

b. The car dates back to the 20th century.

Which are correct below? Do we need the preposition 'in'? Why?

c. This the way that things are done in.

d. This is the way in which things are done.

e. This is the way which things are done.

f. This is the way that things are done.

I see no difference between a and b, but both are a little odd, since we are only 10 years into the 21st. I only like d and f, but I like it best with no preposition and no conjunction.

Thanks. I should've said ' dates from/back to the beginning of the 20th cent.
