Grammar Questions II

Here are some more questions I have about the English language.
1) Is "due to," when used to mean "because of," a usage error? Forexample, "A riot erupted due to the long lines and shortage of tellers."
2) How about when "since" is used to mean "because?" Is that a usageerror also?
3) Is "as well as" a conjunction?
4) "Whatever the surface indications of the moment may be, modern menare basically less tolerant than men of old." Is this correct?
5) "We were unthinkingly familiar with the moguls' immense rough worksas so much weird scenery on long drives." Is this correct, or should it be changed to "We were unthinkingly familiar with the moguls's immsense rough works as we were with so much weird scenery on long drives." instead?
6) "Taxonomy - the branch of biology that describes and classifiesliving creatures - has scope for approximately 1.4 million creatures." Is "scope" used correctly here?
Thanks!

Technically yes, since "due" is an adjective. By making it modify "riot" a correct sentence could be constructed:
(a) The riot was due to the long lines and shortage of tellers.
