He alternated working in the office with long tours overseas
I just wonder the grammar of this sentence, could anyone please help me out? the "alternated" here means a verb but how about the "working"? And "overseas" is an adj right? so in what situation that I can put it behind a noun?
Thank you!

He alternated working in the office with long tours overseas.
Alternate means that you have two activities, A and B.
First you do A, followed by B, then A then B, and this cycle repeats.
