Grammar question no. 92 - as to

Dear All,

I'm a bit uncertain (as to?) how we use as to in sentences. For example, I was about to send this message to a friend of mine but eventually I changed it because I wasn't sure if the way I was going to use as to was correct or not.

Do you think your Mark could advise me as to applying for a PhD?

Thanks

"As to" means "about" or "regarding." It's a bit formal.

Thanks deadrat. So... would you say that sentence of mine sounds alright and native-like?

"As to" is not wrong, but you're talking to a friend over an informal channel (email? text? facebook?) so "as to" sounds stiff. Why wouldn't you write conversationally?

"Do you think Mark could advise me about applying for a PhD?"
