Grammar question no. 83: would have

Hello All,

Here's a quick question regarding the following conversation: why did person B use would have done.

A says: Would it be possible by any chance to switch with you and have the meeting with XYZ at 15:00? I need more time to finish preparing one document and can't do it by 10:00am. Let me know please if it's OK with you or not.

B replies: I would have done it for you but am not feeling well this morning. Wasn’t well all weekend. Coming in later today.

Thanks in advance,

PS If someone would be so kind and check if what person A says is 100% native-like or not, I'd be much obliged.

Perfect Stranger why did person B use would have done. He is referring to a past impossibility. In the past (before he felt sick) he would have agreed, but now he cannot agree to the change of schedule.

Thank you Mister Micawber. Well, would it be possible to say:

I would do it but I'm feeling sick.

I don't understand why someone would want to use the past form here i

Yes.
Perfect StrangerI don't understand why someone would want to use the past form here if he's feeling sick today.
He is thinking about if his friend had asked him before he got sick, as I said.

Perfect Stranger-
A says: Would it be possible by any chance to switch with you ...?
B replies: I would have done it
There's a disconnect here. If A is asking a favor, B is going to say I would do it if he can't do it, not I would have done it. B can only say I would have done it after any chance to do it has passe

I missed that interpretation.

I would have done it (if you had asked before I got sick), but now I'm sick ...

I understand that but... I asked him today in the morning.

At 7:50pm today I sent out an email with my question regarding a meeting with another worker with whom I was supposed to meet at 10:00am. I asked person B if he could switch with me and instead of me

A common mistake. Write "this morning", not "today in the morning".

I believe that was addressed to Mr. M. so you need his input on this. However, I would say that we simply have to guess sometimes why a speaker has one thing or another in mind. We don't know why he is thinking about the past nor why he is thinking about the pr

We don't know why he is thinking about the past nor why he is thinking about the present when he responds as in your example. All we know is that if he says 'would have' he's thinking abou
