Grammar question no. 81: their?

Dear All,

Here's the sentence in question:

No new parent feels secure about their new situation.

First of all... is no new parent singular or plural?

Secondly... is it correct (and I mean, based on strict grammar rules) to use their in this sentence? After all, no new parent is followed by a verb in the singular form...

Thanks!

This is a perennial question in English. Most people would accept your sentence in informal English. Some people would object to it in formal situations and prefer "his or her".
