Grammar question no. 74: bad or badly

Dear All,

Do we say:

He was hurt pretty badly in the fighting.

or

He was hurt pretty bad in the fighting.

PS By the way, I personally think that in the fighting should be changed into in the fight or while he was fighting.

If you are a stickler for your Grandmother's grammar, it is "badly."
But in these modern times, you will hear "bad" all the time.
