Grammar question no. 70

Dear All,

If the situation is as follows, what tense selection would be best?

A person is in hospital. One day she passes away. It was actually known that she didn't have much time left.

Should we say:

My good friend has passed away. Yesterday at 4 of Canadian time. I have been/I had been prepared for the worst news because the doctors have/had been saying she hadn't had/didn't have much time left.

Thank you
