Grammar question no. 59: past perfect with past simple

Hello there,

Here's the context:

Person A offered a job to person B.
Person B sent all documents over to person A.
Person A mentioned person B was the best candidate.
Person C informed person A that the job was taken.
Person B wants to send the following words:

You'd mentioned in one of your emails I'd been the strongest candidate for the HR manager position and then Kathy told me the job was unavailable anymore.

I'm not sure if the tenses are chosen correctly.

Would you please drop a line or two in this thread?

Thank you

Thanks very much Mister Micawber but can you tell me why you choose past simple over past perfect?

As far as I know, if one past action preceds another past action then the use of past perfect is justified.

Only when the order of events is otherwise unclear.
