Grammar question no. 43 - pres. perfect or past perfect?

Good day to you all.

Here's a quick question. Can you help me correct the second sentence? Should I use the present or past perfect tense there?

Last week the chain in my motorcycle broke down and I got stuck in the middle of nowhere. I hadn't thought of bringing a spare one because nothing like that had/has ever happened to me before.

Thanks
