Grammar question no. 26 - a classic: she's fallen asleep/she fell asleep, I've just woken up/I just woke up

Dear All,

Let's say two friends are chatting on-line. Suddenly, one of them stops replying. It's late and the other person assumes that his/her friend has fallen asleep or... fell asleep.

And that's precisely my question. Should the person say: Oh, she has fallen asleep or... She fell asleep.

Similarly... right after I wake up someone gives me a call... and asks what I'm doing... Should I reply:

I've just woken up or I just woke up

Thanks a lot for any comments

Both are common. For myself, when I just wake up, I am too sleepy to form the present perfect.

Haha, thanks. I guess that's called language economy. I just figured that since the action has just happened, the present perfect is the only grammatically correct option.

How about the situation about two friends chatting on-lin

It is not necessary to do so; Americans often do not.
