Grammar question no. 15 - cleft sentences (2)

Dear Users,

I'd like to analyze a cleft sentence and find answers to some tricky questions.

1. The boys are taking Sandy to the match ---> What the boys are doing is taking Sandy to the
match.
  • is taking a gerund verb or a participle?
  • why can't we say what the boys are doing is to take Sandy... does it have anything to do with the agreement of tenses?
  • what is the subject clause here?
Thank you
