Hello,
Is there any reasoning for why the plural of the word "standby" is "standbys" and not "standbies," or is it just something you need to remember?

I guess it's because the "y" retains its pronunciation as "i" in such words, whereas it becomes "ee" in "baby" and "pony". Also, the "by" part retains its character as a word in the compound.
