Grammar question

Hello,

Is there any reasoning for why the plural of the word "standby" is "standbys" and not "standbies," or is it just something you need to remember?

Thanks for any answers

towel chalk 193 Is there any reasoning for why the plural of the word "standby" is "standbys" and not "standbies," or is it just something you need to remember? I guess it's because the "y" retains its pronunciation as "i" in such words, whereas it becomes "ee" in "baby" and "pony". Also, the "by" part retains its character as a word in the compound.
