Now every spring and fall a group of eight or so breast cancer survivors gets together

or

Now every spring and fall a group of eight or so breast cancer survivors get together

Shouldn't 'get' agree with the latter noun-in this case 'survivors'? Are we talking about a group getting together or survivors getting together? I think the practice is to make the verb agree with the latter noun. Isn't it?
