grammar question

0In the sentence, 'He said that the lead detective's position had been open for six months and that he had begun to think it would never be filled', should there be a comma after 'months'?I know that these are two independent clauses (or are they, since they are the objects of 'said'), but it just does not look right. Thank for any help. 0-
