GRAMMAR QUESTION

Is the following sentence correct?
It has proceeded on the hypothesis that Conrad imagined events and situations in a manner recalling the movie-maker's way of seeing and telling things.

It's correct, but quite difficult to follow. Also, I'm not quite sure why you would use a present perfect tense (It has proceeded).

Why not simplify it a little:

'It proceeds on the assumption that Conrad saw things in a cinematic way.'
