What would be the proper answer in the following dialogue? Can you explain why you opt for one or another?

This dialog sounds rather strange from a logic point of view. The question is about "why", not what time of day it was. Sometimes, when a question is framed in such a way that makes the answering rather difficult. This is one perfect exmaple.
